In a landmark moment for India’s defense infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled the nation’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in the Moran area of Assam’s Dibrugarh district. This cutting-edge setup on the national highway marks a significant boost for the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities in the strategically vital Northeast region.

Arriving aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft that demonstrated the facility’s prowess by landing smoothly on the highway strip, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The event drew over a lakh enthusiastic spectators, underscoring the project’s national importance.

Post-inauguration, the Prime Minister witnessed a breathtaking air show featuring Rafale, Sukhoi, and MiG fighter jets executing flawless takeoffs and landings on the 4.2 km concrete strip. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh personally briefed PM Modi on the ELF’s advanced features, highlighting its capacity to handle fighter aircraft up to 40 tons and transport planes with a maximum takeoff weight of 74 tons.

Designed in collaboration with the Indian Air Force, the Moran ELF stands out for its seamless runway without central dividers, enabling unrestricted aircraft movements. Its proximity to the India-China border amplifies its strategic value, providing the IAF with enhanced flexibility amid rising regional tensions.

This development is being hailed as a major stride in fortifying India’s military presence in upper Assam. By converting a highway segment into a robust emergency runway capable of supporting both military and civilian operations, the facility ensures rapid response capabilities in critical scenarios. Experts note that it will significantly improve aerial surveillance and rapid deployment options in the Northeast, a region witnessing increased geopolitical focus.

PM Modi’s visit not only celebrated this engineering marvel but also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing defense infrastructure. As the Northeast continues to emerge as a key growth corridor, such initiatives promise to blend security enhancements with developmental momentum, securing a stronger future for the region.
