Patna University has abruptly halted its highly anticipated student union elections, originally set for February 28, throwing the campus into a whirlwind of uncertainty. The decision comes in the wake of a series of unruly incidents that breached election protocols and disrupted campus harmony.
In an official statement, university authorities highlighted recent violations, including unauthorized entry by a group of students into Patna Women’s College premises. The intruders engaged in sloganeering without permission, brandishing printed banners and posters in clear defiance of the election code of conduct. Reports also surfaced of expensive four-wheelers being used for campaigning well ahead of the designated period.
Tensions escalated further on January 21 when students stormed a classroom at Patna Science College, behaving indecently towards a teacher and university officials. These events prompted the administration to suspend the 2025-26 student union elections with immediate effect until further notice.
The postponement has sparked widespread reactions among student organizations and candidates who were deep into their campaign preparations. With nominations already filed—16 for president, 9 each for vice-president, general secretary, and treasurer, 8 for joint secretary, and 54 for councilor positions—the sudden halt has left many questioning the future timeline.
Observers note that the university’s firm stance sends a strong message against indiscipline, prioritizing a secure environment for fair electoral processes. As discussions intensify on when polls might resume, the campus remains on edge, with student leaders calling for swift resolutions to avoid prolonged delays.
