Patna Police launched a late-night crackdown at Patna University’s Minto Hostel, arresting eight students found heavily intoxicated with alcohol. The operation, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central) Bhanu Pratap Singh, was triggered by ongoing complaints and heightened tensions ahead of the university’s student union elections.
With nominations for the elections wrapping up just a day earlier, authorities were on high alert. Over 51 candidates are vying for key positions, including 16 for president, fueling a charged atmosphere on campus. The raid targeted multiple hostels under Pirbahor police station jurisdiction, uncovering the students in a state of inebriation.
Police revealed that some of those detained have links to a prior bomb case registered at Pirbahor station, involving charges under the Explosive Substances Act. One student has a known criminal history, raising serious concerns about indiscipline in the hostels. All eight were caught red-handed with alcohol in their systems during the sweep.
DSP Singh confirmed that teams from neighboring police stations were roped in for the intensive checks, which addressed long-standing grievances about hostel activities. Interrogations are underway, and further actions will follow based on findings. Security has been beefed up across the university precincts to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
This isn’t a one-off; police have vowed to continue raids in all hostels to maintain order. The university administration remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely as the campus braces for the polls. Such measures underscore the commitment to a secure electoral process amid reports of unruly behavior.
