Following strong opposition, the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2025, has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The bill deals with the removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and ministers facing serious criminal charges and detained for 30 days. The opposition, initially hesitant, will now participate in the JPC to discuss the bill. The names of the opposition members on the JPC may be announced today. The JPC will include 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. During a session on Thursday, the Rajya Sabha approved sending three bills to a joint committee. The bills include provisions for removing PMs, CMs, and ministers arrested on serious criminal charges after a detention period. Home Minister Amit Shah proposed sending the 2025 amendment bill, along with other bills, to the JPC for review during a session marked by disruptions. The committee has been instructed to present its report during the upcoming winter session of Parliament, which is projected to commence in late November.
