President’s rule in Manipur will be extended for another six months, effective from August 13, 2025. The decision follows the initial implementation of President’s rule on February 13, 2025, after CM N. Biren Singh stepped down amidst ethnic clashes. The resolution to extend the rule was brought forward by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Bulletin confirmed the motion’s approval. The motion, proposed by Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, seeks parliamentary approval to extend the President’s proclamation under Article 356 of the Constitution, which was originally enacted in Manipur on February 13, 2025. The extension period will be for six months starting from August 13, 2025.

Since May 3, 2023, ethnic tensions and violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities have resulted in more than 250 deaths and displaced over 60,000 people. The main highways in the state, National Highways 2 and 37, which connect the Imphal Valley with Nagaland and Assam, run through Kuki-Zo-dominant areas, causing disruption to Meitei movement since May 2023. Over 6,000 police weapons have also been reported stolen in the state.
