Hyderabad, February 9: In a bold move, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has lodged a formal complaint with the city police commissioner, demanding criminal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The grievance centers on a now-deleted controversial video posted on the official BJP Assam X account, which allegedly depicted the CM firing at Muslims.
Owaisi, in his detailed letter, accused Sarma of a long history of inflammatory rhetoric against the Muslim community across social media, print outlets, public speeches, and various platforms. Many such statements remain accessible online, fueling communal tensions.
“I draw your attention to the fact that Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has been consistently making statements against the Muslim community through social media, print media, public speeches, and other platforms for several years,” Owaisi wrote. He highlighted how Sarma has intensified these hate-filled speeches in recent months, deliberately aiming to hurt Muslim sentiments and incite enmity between Hindus and Muslims, actions that undermine national unity and communal harmony.
Referencing the Supreme Court’s ruling in Shaheen Abdullah vs Union of India, Owaisi emphasized the constitutional duty of law enforcement to protect fundamental rights, uphold secularism, and act proactively against hate speech—even without formal complaints. Any inaction would amount to dereliction of duty.
The video in question, posted on February 7 and removed the next day, showed Sarma armed and targeting individuals clearly portrayed as Muslims, with captions like ‘point blank shot’ and ‘no mercy.’ Owaisi described it as a malicious act intended to provoke religious outrage and communal violence.
Since the video was accessible nationwide, including in Hyderabad, Owaisi urged immediate legal action under relevant laws. This complaint underscores the growing concerns over polarizing content from high political offices and its potential to destabilize India’s social fabric.
