Noida authorities have launched a stringent road safety campaign, resulting in over 6,600 vehicles being challaned and 21 impounded in just days. The initiative, part of the nationwide Road Safety Month, targets reckless driving and traffic violations plaguing the bustling city.

Traffic police teams fanned out across key junctions and highways, equipped with speed guns, breathalyzers, and surveillance cameras. Violations ranged from speeding and drunk driving to helmetless two-wheeler riders and overloaded trucks. ‘Our goal is zero tolerance for behaviors endangering lives,’ declared a senior traffic official, emphasizing the campaign’s focus on enforcement over mere warnings.

The drive comes amid rising road fatalities in Uttar Pradesh, where Noida has seen a spike in accidents due to rapid urbanization and high vehicle density. Last year alone, over 1,200 lives were lost statewide, prompting this aggressive push. Impounded vehicles include luxury sedans caught triple-parking and commercial autos flouting emission norms.

Public response has been mixed. While commuters applaud stricter measures, some complain of excessive fining. ‘It’s about time someone cracked down on lawless bikers weaving through traffic,’ said resident Priya Sharma. Fines collected so far exceed Rs 50 lakhs, with proceeds earmarked for safety infrastructure like pedestrian crossings and signages.

As the month progresses, expect more checkpoints and awareness drives in schools and offices. Authorities warn that repeat offenders face license suspensions and vehicle auctions. This campaign underscores Noida’s commitment to safer roads, blending enforcement with education for lasting impact.
