In a striking display of devotion, Union Minister Nityanand Rai took on the role of a traditional bullock cart driver during the grand Shiva Baraat in Hajipur, Bihar’s Vaishali district. Dressed in a simple dhoti, kurta, and gamchha, Rai immersed himself in the worship of Lord Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
The ancient Pataleshwar Nath Temple in Hajipur served as the starting point for this time-honored tradition. Rai arrived early Sunday morning for prayers before joining the procession, steering the bullock cart adorned with divine imagery. For nearly three decades, the BJP leader has faithfully upheld this ritual, underscoring his deep-rooted faith despite his high-profile political career.
Thousands of devotees flooded the streets, chanting ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and showering the air with colored powders. The atmosphere pulsed with energy as participants in costumes depicting ghosts, demons, horses, and elephants paraded alongside bands playing rhythmic dhols and manjiras.
Rai extended greetings to the gathered crowd, emphasizing the pilgrimage’s significance. ‘People from across Vaishali converge here for Maha Shivratri,’ he said. ‘This is my fortune and faith; I’ll continue this lifelong commitment.’
The vibrant procession wound through the city, culminating at Akshay Vat Rai Stadium, where outstanding tableaux and performers received honors. Rai prayed for peace and prosperity for all, as BJP leaders and Shiva bhakts echoed resounding slogans, filling Hajipur with spiritual fervor.
