Patna erupted in political drama on Monday as Bihar’s Legislative Council session turned chaotic during the budget discussions. Opposition leaders, led by former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, unleashed a fierce protest against the state’s deteriorating law and order situation. Demanding Nitish Kumar’s immediate resignation, they raised slogans and pointed fingers at rising crimes against women and vulnerable communities.
The flashpoint came when RJD MLC Sunil Singh highlighted the horrific rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Darbhanga. Rabri Devi seized the moment, accusing the government of failing to protect daughters across Bihar. ‘No district is safe for our girls,’ she thundered, escalating the uproar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, visibly agitated, rose from his seat to counter the attacks. ‘These are the same people who did nothing in power,’ he retorted sharply. ‘Have they ever empowered a single woman? Under our government, action is swift against wrongdoers. Bihar is progressing rapidly—unlike the 15 years of their inaction.’
Pointing directly at the hecklers, Nitish warned, ‘Strict action should be taken against these disruptors. Is this any way to conduct proceedings?’ The exchange underscored deep divisions, with opposition alleging atrocities on Dalits, backwards, and minorities.
Before the session, protesters had already gathered in the assembly premises, chanting against the regime. Rabri Devi, speaking to reporters, blasted Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary, the home minister, calling for his resignation. ‘Women need protection; daughters from Dalit, minority, and poor families are being killed,’ she stated.
As the budget session continues, this showdown signals escalating tensions ahead of key electoral battles. Bihar’s political landscape remains volatile, with law and order emerging as a battleground issue.
