In a decisive move to protect Rajasthan’s vital water resources, the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) Central Zonal Bench in Bhopal has directed the Bhilwara District Collector to immediately remove encroachments from key water bodies in Kotri tehsil. This order came during a hearing on a petition filed by Vishnu Kumar Vaishnav, highlighting severe environmental violations and illegal occupations threatening local ecology.
The bench, presided over by Justice Shiv Kumar Singh and Expert Member Ishwar Singh, scrutinized reports from a joint committee and official records prepared by the tehsildar. These documents unequivocally confirmed encroachments on notified water bodies, including Dharmo Talab and Fateh Sagar, locally known as Baba Talab. The petitioner emphasized that these ponds play a crucial role in groundwater recharge and maintaining ecological balance in the region.
Vishnu Kumar Vaishnav detailed how unchecked encroachments have led to the degradation of these essential water sources, posing long-term risks to water conservation efforts. He argued that the violations contravene both environmental norms and revenue laws, demanding swift legal action.
Representatives from the Rajasthan government assured the tribunal that proceedings under relevant revenue and environmental statutes have already commenced. They acknowledged the gravity of encroachments on protected water bodies and committed to resolving the issue through appropriate measures.
Emphasizing the non-negotiable importance of safeguarding water bodies for environmental sustainability, the NGT instructed the District Collector to take all necessary steps without delay. Affected parties have been granted liberty to join proceedings within two weeks, provided they serve advance copies to opposite parties.
The tribunal will review compliance and progress on February 25, 2026. This directive underscores the urgent need for robust enforcement against encroachments that jeopardize Rajasthan’s water security and biodiversity.
