A somber note was struck in the Rajya Sabha as Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge expressed regret over the absence of a farewell for outgoing Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Addressing the newly appointed Chairman, CP Radhakrishnan, Kharge stated his disappointment, noting the unexpected nature of Dhankhar’s departure. He assured the new Chairman of the Congress party’s commitment to cooperate in maintaining the House’s smooth functioning. Kharge also called for equitable treatment for all members, irrespective of their party affiliation, emphasizing that such fairness is essential for the credibility of the Chair. He affirmed adherence to constitutional principles and parliamentary traditions. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju voiced strong disapproval of Kharge’s comments, pointing out the opposition’s prior critical stance and attempts to remove Dhankhar from his position, urging a focus on the present occasion.
