Malloujula Venugopal Rao, a key figure within the CPI/Maoist hierarchy and a politburo member known as Sonu, has surrendered in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, alongside 60 of his associates. This significant development underscores the success of strategic counter-insurgency operations in weakening the Naxal movement. Rao’s decision to surrender was foreshadowed in September when he publicly declared his intention to abandon violence. This public declaration garnered considerable backing from numerous Maoist cadres, including many from Chhattisgarh, who decided to join him in seeking a peaceful resolution. Law enforcement agencies are celebrating this as a major achievement, highlighting their persistent efforts to de-escalate the conflict and reintegrate former militants into society. Gadchiroli, a historically volatile district, has witnessed a notable shift with this large-scale surrender, offering renewed hope for lasting peace and security against internal threats.
