Chaos erupted in Mumbai’s Bhyakhla neighborhood late Wednesday night when the lift in the 18-storey Jai Kripa Tower residential building plummeted suddenly, injuring five people. The incident occurred around 10:02 PM, sending residents into panic as the elevator cable snapped while descending from the fourth floor.
Emergency services sprang into action immediately after receiving distress calls. Mumbai Fire Brigade teams, local police, BEST personnel, 108 ambulance services, and BMC ward staff rushed to the scene, launching swift rescue operations. The coordinated response ensured the injured were quickly extracted and transported to nearby hospitals.
Among the victims treated at JJ Hospital were Kalpita Pawar (38), Yash Balvikar (24), and Usha Gupta (56). All three received outpatient care and are reported to be in stable condition. Jamuna Prasad Shivhare (50) was admitted to Balaji Hospital, where his condition remains stable. Shilipa More (54) was treated on an outpatient basis at Jaslok Hospital and is also doing well.
Medical sources confirmed that none of the injured sustained critical injuries, providing some relief to anxious families. Preliminary investigations point to a cable failure as the cause, but authorities have launched a thorough technical probe into the lift’s maintenance history.
Police officials arrived promptly and facilitated the victims’ transfer to medical care. An FIR has been registered based on complaints from relatives, with investigators focusing on the elevator’s service records and how long it had been malfunctioning. A dedicated probe team has been formed to submit a detailed report to senior officials, promising strict action against any negligent parties.
This tragic mishap underscores the critical need for regular safety audits in high-rise buildings across Mumbai, where thousands rely on elevators daily. As the investigation unfolds, residents are urged to report any lift irregularities without delay.
