Ujjain, a city steeped in spiritual heritage, is gearing up for the grand Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028. In a significant step towards enhancing infrastructure, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav laid the foundation stone for the Rs 1133 crore Hariyakhedi Water Augmentation Project on Wednesday.

This ambitious initiative, undertaken by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation, aims to ensure a reliable water supply for the city’s residents and the millions of pilgrims expected during the mega religious event. The project includes the construction of 17 new overhead tanks with capacities ranging from 600 to 3000 kiloliters, alongside laying 708 kilometers of pipeline, including 534 km of new distribution network.

The development comes at a crucial time as Ujjain undergoes rapid transformation. Roads are being widened and repaired, encroachments around the iconic Mahakaleshwar Temple and other areas are being cleared, and extensive preparations are underway for the Kshipra River ghats where devotees will take holy dips.

Chief Minister Yadav emphasized the government’s commitment to providing world-class facilities. ‘Simhastha 2028 will be a landmark event, and we are leaving no stone unturned to make it memorable for all,’ he stated during the groundbreaking ceremony attended by local officials and citizens.

Once completed, the project will benefit a large population by delivering timely and sufficient water, addressing long-standing supply issues exacerbated by the anticipated influx of visitors. Parallel efforts include beautifying the Kshipra River banks and improving civic amenities across the city.

Ujjain’s transformation reflects Madhya Pradesh’s broader vision for sustainable urban development tied to cultural and religious tourism. As construction gains momentum, the city is poised to welcome the world with enhanced infrastructure and seamless services.
