In a stark revelation that underscores a public health crisis, Mizoram records the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in India. Health officials disclosed on Sunday that in Aizawl district, the age-adjusted cancer rate stands at 269.4 per 100,000 men, painting a grim picture of the state’s battle against the disease.

Senior officials from the Health and Family Welfare Department highlighted stomach and lung cancers as the most prevalent, attributing them primarily to rampant tobacco and betel nut consumption, poor dietary habits, and genetic predispositions. These lifestyle factors have turned Mizoram into an epicenter of oncology challenges unlike anywhere else in the country.

To combat this, the Mizoram government signed a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank on January 23 for an externally aided project titled ‘Supporting Public Health Care System Strengthening to Achieve Universal Health Care for Mizoram,’ popularly known as the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme. Complementing this is the ongoing World Bank-funded Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project, expected to conclude by March 2026.

A key component is the establishment of the Mizoram State Super Speciality Cancer and Research Centre in Aizawl under the Health Department. Addressing a gathering on Saturday, Health Minister Lalrinpuii expressed deep concern over Mizoram’s disproportionately high cancer cases relative to its population. She echoed observations from Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai’s director, who noted an unusually high number of cancer patients from Mizoram seeking treatment there.

Experts point to excessive tobacco use, unhealthy diets featuring smoked meats, pork fat, and oils, alongside sedentary lifestyles as major culprits. The minister stressed that breast cancer is the most common among Indian women, followed by cervical cancer, with 99.7% of the latter linked to Human Papillomavirus (HPV). She hailed free vaccination programs as vital prevention tools and urged all eligible 14-year-old girls to get vaccinated.

Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, speaking at the same event, revealed that one in every five cervical cancer patients worldwide hails from India. He praised free vaccination drives for expectant mothers and teenage girls as timely interventions, especially since Mizoram leads the nation in cervical cancer cases with alarmingly low screening rates among women.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide HPV vaccination campaign for 14-year-old girls against cervical cancer during a Saturday event in Ajmer. Officials hope these initiatives will save lives, strengthen families, and bolster Mizoram’s overall development trajectory.
