Mumbai, February 10: Bengali beauty Mimi Chakraborty has dazzled audiences across Bollywood, regional cinema, television, and even music. Now 37 tomorrow, the versatile star has also ventured into politics. On her special day, let’s revisit her bold entry into showbiz against her parents’ wishes.
Born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, Mimi harbored dreams of stardom from childhood. She fantasized about becoming an actress long before understanding television or films. Her parents, however, had firm reservations about her entering the entertainment industry. Undeterred, Mimi secretly auditioned and landed her debut TV role in the Bengali serial ‘Ganer Oparey’ without informing them.
The truth surfaced when the promo aired. Her mother called, spotting her on screen. Mimi initially denied it was her, but the facade crumbled. Furious that she had prioritized acting over studies in Pune, her father cut off communication for seven to eight months. ‘They sent me for education, not shooting,’ Mimi later recalled in interviews.
This childhood passion began innocently. As a little girl, she called TV the ‘box’ and pestered her mother about entering it. ‘Study hard,’ came the reply. So she did, channeling her focus toward her dream. From TV, she transitioned to films, debuting in Bengali hit ‘Bapi Bari Jaa’. Hits like ‘Bojhena Shey Bojhena’, ‘Yoddha: The Warrior’, ‘Gangster’, and ‘Rakchhabi’ followed, alongside Bollywood forays.
Politics beckoned too; she served as a Trinamool Congress MP but exited amid controversies. Today, Mimi stands tall, her journey a testament to pursuing dreams relentlessly. As she turns 37, fans celebrate a trailblazer who turned rebellion into success.
