Kashmiri Pandits observed Diwali with traditional fervor at the historic Martand Sun Temple in Mattan, Anantnag, filling the ancient site with the radiant glow of diyas. The festival of lights saw a beautiful confluence of faith and community spirit.

Reinforcing age-old bonds, local Muslims joined the Kashmiri Pandits in celebrating Diwali at the revered Surya Mandir. This inclusive participation highlighted the enduring legacy of communal harmony and brotherhood that characterizes Kashmir.

The temple premises and surrounding areas were exquisitely decorated and lit, creating an enchanting and festive atmosphere for all attendees. Residents of Anantnag town also embraced the spirit, sharing sweets and greetings in a heartfelt display of unity.

An annual tradition, the participation of the local Muslim community aims to strengthen friendship and mutual understanding, making the Diwali celebration at the Sun Temple a unique symbol of interfaith cooperation.

The auspicious Lakshmi Puja took place on the Amavasya tithi, followed by continued devotional activities and social gatherings throughout the evening. The Martand Tirath Trust notes the temple’s historical importance as the believed birthplace of the Sun, amplifying its spiritual significance during Diwali.

This year’s celebration was more than just a religious observance; it was a powerful affirmation of hope for the restoration of normalcy and the peaceful coexistence that defined Kashmir in earlier times.
