Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur in May 2023, his first since the ethnic violence, saw him arriving in Imphal on a Saturday afternoon. Heavy rainfall at the time prevented the planned helicopter journey to Churachandpur. Instead, he chose to travel by road to the Kuki-dominated Churachandpur district. During his address in Churachandpur, PM Modi underscored the central government’s steadfast support for the people of Manipur, highlighting their goal to transform the state into a symbol of peace and prosperity. The road journey from Imphal to Churachandpur took approximately 90 minutes. PM Modi opted for the road trip to engage with the people directly. PM Modi stated that he would not forget the affection he received. Speaking at a public gathering in Churachandpur, PM Modi described Manipur as a land of hope. He acknowledged that the violence had cast a shadow over the beautiful region and expressed his meeting with some affected people in a relief camp, adding that he now believes a new dawn of hope and faith is breaking in Manipur. PM Modi emphasized the importance of peace for development. He cited the resolution of conflicts in the Northeast over the last 11 years. He urged all groups and organizations to choose the path of peace. He further stated that Manipur is progressing with the rest of the country. A medical college has now been established in Churachandpur. The Prime Minister inaugurated projects worth over ₹7,300 crore, which he said would improve the lives of Manipur’s people, especially in the hilly areas. PM Modi also met with those displaced by the ethnic violence in the state, listening to their concerns.
