Imphal, March 1 – A potential catastrophe was narrowly avoided at the India-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Moreh town when alert soldiers swiftly tackled a raging forest fire near the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and Friendship Bridge. Officials confirmed that the timely intervention by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles personnel prevented the flames from spreading to critical infrastructure.

Defense sources revealed that the fire broke out in the jungles adjacent to the Friendship Bridge at Moreh ICP in Tengnoupal district. Vigilant troops stationed along the international boundary spotted thick smoke rising from the nearby forest and immediately sprang into action. Their rapid response ensured the blaze was contained before it could threaten the sensitive border outpost.

The border area’s security pickets played a pivotal role, detecting the fire at its early stages. Soldiers rushed to the scene, initiating firefighting measures including creating firebreaks and deploying available resources. The operation showcased seamless coordination, with all safety protocols strictly followed to protect personnel, locals, and property.

No casualties or significant damage were reported, as the fire was fully extinguished and the area monitored to prevent re-ignition. This incident underscores the high level of vigilance maintained by border security forces, not just for national security but also for environmental protection and community safety.

Moreh serves as a key trading hub along the 1,643-km unfenced India-Myanmar border, which spans Manipur (398 km), Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km). The ICP Moreh, spread over 45.58 acres and built at a cost of Rs 72.67 crore in 2018, is linked to the proposed 1,360-km India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway project. The Friendship Bridge connects India to Myanmar’s Sagaing Division’s Kalewa town, highlighting its strategic importance.

The successful containment reflects the armed forces’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding vital border assets amid growing regional connectivity initiatives.
