SALEM, Tamil Nadu – Tragedy struck during a high-profile political rally of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in Salem on Friday when a 37-year-old migrant worker from North India collapsed and died from a suspected heart attack. The incident unfolded amid a massive crowd gathered to hear actor-turned-politician Vijay address party supporters at KVP Garden near Sheelanaickenpatty.
Identified as Siraj, the deceased was a laborer battling heart issues, having undergone surgery about a year prior. Eyewitnesses reported he suddenly fainted while standing in the packed venue. Quick action by those nearby rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Salem police have registered a case and launched an investigation, though preliminary findings point to natural causes. Despite the shock, the event pressed on under tight security and medical supervision.
Vijay, undeterred, took the stage to rally the crowd. ‘I’m not here begging for votes; I’m demanding justice for Tamil Nadu’s people,’ he declared, launching a scathing attack on the ruling DMK. He accused them of denying TVK meeting spaces while allowing other parties free rein, a tactic to stifle his rising influence.
Waving the party’s whistle symbol, Vijay urged supporters: ‘If they offer money, take it – it’s your money. But press the whistle when you vote.’ Dismissing critics questioning his administrative credentials, he quipped that traditional politicians only knew how to loot public funds.
Drawing inspiration from legends like CN Annadurai, MGR, and Jayalalithaa, Vijay emphasized that every great leader started without experience. ‘Honesty and love for the people are all that’s needed,’ he asserted, firing up the enthusiastic audience.
The rally highlighted TVK’s growing momentum ahead of elections, even as this unfortunate death cast a brief shadow over the proceedings. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
