West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly refuted claims that she distorted her own statements regarding the alleged gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur. She accused the media of misrepresenting her remarks and engaging in “politics” over the sensitive issue. “The media distorted my words. You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics…” Banerjee stated, urging for responsible reporting. Her earlier comments, which drew controversy, questioned why the victim was out at 12:30 AM and suggested that colleges should restrict female students from leaving campus at night for their own safety. While condemning the crime and promising swift action, Banerjee also emphasized the importance of student vigilance and the role of educational institutions in safeguarding their students. The brutal incident has led to widespread condemnation and demands for justice for the survivor.
