The Madras High Court has strongly criticized caste-based discrimination in water access and issued orders for statewide action. The court’s intervention stems from a case in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district, where disparities in access to public water resources have been observed. The ruling was made in response to a bail petition filed by a 65-year-old woman from the Scheduled Caste community, who described instances of denied access to drinking water in Thalaivankottai village. Justice Dr. R.N. Manjula labeled the denial of water access to SC residents as “pathetic and surprising.” The court emphasized that clean drinking water is a fundamental right. Previously, the court had directed the Tenkasi District Collector to ensure equal access to water for all residents. The court appreciated the prompt measures taken. Officials throughout Tamil Nadu are now mandated to implement the methods employed in Thalaivankottai village and urban areas within three weeks, with a report due on August 21. The court also invoked sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
