In a decisive crackdown on urban crime, Kolkata Police arrested six individuals linked to two distinct theft incidents on Saturday. This operation unfolded amid heightened vigilance ordered by Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar, who personally inspected law enforcement efforts across the city.
Four suspects hail from Gujarat: Anil Ramju Salat, Dhiru Kalo Salat, Samir Salat, and Raju Kumar. They were apprehended by the Intelligence Branch’s ‘Watch’ unit at Lalbazar headquarters from the Hastings area. These men stand accused in a burglary reported at Jorasanko Police Station on January 14. Investigation teams had been tracking them for over a month before closing in successfully.
In a parallel development, two local residents from Entally in central Kolkata—Muhammad Shahnavaz alias Sunny and Muhammad Samir—were nabbed from Park Circus. They face charges of stealing mobile phones, cash, and other items from a cab driver’s vehicle, as per a complaint lodged at Girish Park Police Station on January 20.
Commissioner Sarkar’s recent directives during a monthly crime prevention meeting emphasized visible patrolling during peak hours citywide. His street-level inspections on Saturday coincided with these arrests, signaling a robust push against theft rings. Sources indicate the commissioner’s proactive oversight is yielding tangible results in maintaining order.
As Kolkata grapples with petty crimes amid its bustling streets, these arrests underscore the police’s commitment to swift justice. Investigations continue, with the accused slated for court proceedings soon.
