Thiruvananthapuram buzzed with controversy after Malayalam actor Prem Kumar was removed from his role as Chairman-in-Charge of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. On Saturday, Culture and Cinema Minister Saji Cherian stepped in with a detailed clarification, insisting the change was purely procedural and unrelated to the actor’s personal views or public statements.

The minister’s response came swiftly after Prem Kumar expressed dismay on social media over his abrupt ouster without formal notice. Addressing these concerns head-on, Cherian emphasized that the Kerala government takes the worries of prominent film industry figures seriously and acted to rectify any miscommunication.

He underscored the CPI(M)-led government’s unwavering support for democratic rights, allowing cultural figures associated with state institutions to voice their opinions freely. ‘Their views need not align with the government or the Left Democratic Front,’ Cherian stated firmly, adding that administrative decisions are never based on personal ideologies.

Poets like K. Satchidanandan or actors such as Prem Kumar, the minister noted, hold personal opinions that do not influence official actions. Detailing the sequence of events, Cherian explained that Prem Kumar had initially served as Vice-Chairman before stepping up to Chairman-in-Charge following filmmaker Ranjith’s resignation.

Praising Kumar’s performance, Cherian clarified the shift occurred because the Academy’s governing body term had expired, necessitating a new committee. Renowned sound designer Resul Pookutty now holds the chairman position, a move Prem Kumar himself welcomed, according to the minister.

If any communication lapses occurred in notifying the decision, Cherian promised an inquiry and offered dialogue to address personal grievances. Wrapping up, he lauded Prem Kumar’s artistic contributions and dedicated service to the Academy, signaling the end of the episode on a respectful note.
