Srinagar transformed into a hub of sporting excellence and camaraderie on Sunday for the second annual Kashmir Marathon 2025. More than 1,500 runners, representing 27 Indian states and 11 countries, gathered at the start line in the bustling Polo View market. The event, a joint initiative by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir, and the J&K Sports Council, celebrated the indomitable human spirit and the unifying power of sport.

International participants from nations like Germany, Denmark, the USA, Ethiopia, Kenya, Japan, and Sri Lanka joined their Indian counterparts, underscoring the marathon’s growing international stature. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led by example, participating in and completing the half-marathon along the serene Dal Lake. He shared his positive experience and encouraged all runners, highlighting his personal improvement from the previous year.

The early morning start was graced by the presence of senior officials and Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty. Shetty was deeply impressed by the vibrant atmosphere and the participants’ dedication. He articulated that the marathon beautifully encapsulated themes of unity, fitness, and peace, observing the collective spirit of running for Kashmir and India. Shetty also commented on the returning allure of the Valley, foreseeing its rise as a significant venue for national and international sporting events. He alluded to further major events scheduled for February, signaling continued momentum.

Participants competed across demanding full (42 km) and half (21 km) marathon courses. The spectacular vistas of Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Range offered runners a world-class experience, making the Kashmir Marathon a truly unique and visually stunning competition, complete with a Rs. 25 lakh prize purse.
