A massive nationwide strike is set for July 9, involving over 25 crore workers. This ‘Bharat Bandh,’ organized by a joint platform of ten central trade unions, targets the government’s policies, particularly those perceived as favoring corporate interests. Sectors such as banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, and highways are expected to be heavily impacted. The strike’s demands revolve around employment, with calls for filling vacant positions, job creation, increased MNREGA benefits, and wage hikes. Unions are also demanding an urban MNREGA equivalent and a review of the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme. Banking services are likely to be disrupted, with the Bank Employees Union confirming participation. While schools and colleges are unlikely to close, disruptions in government services are anticipated. Individuals are advised to check with their local bank branches before visiting on Wednesday.
