The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Secretariat has issued a statement clarifying its position on the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA). The Secretariat stated unequivocally that it did not approve the implementation of PSA against the Doda-based legislator. Malik was detained under strict preventive laws. The AAP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit president, Mehraj Malik, was subsequently sent to Kathua jail on Monday. The Assembly Secretariat’s statement addressed media reports and social media posts that claimed it had supported the application of the Public Safety Act 1978 on MLA Mehraj Malik. The Secretariat refuted these claims, labeling them as entirely inaccurate and baseless. It maintained that it had no involvement in the arrest of the MLA. The statement elaborated that the Secretariat adhered to its duty by notifying all MLAs of Malik’s arrest, in accordance with Rule 260 of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Rule 260 stipulates that the Secretariat is obligated to inform all MLAs of any information received. When the House is in session, the Speaker announces the information, and if the House is not in session, it is published in a bulletin for all MLAs. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal voiced his opposition to Malik’s arrest on social media, questioning if requesting hospitals for his constituency constituted an offense that warranted the MLA’s imprisonment. He added that Malik would continue to be the voice of the public and fight for their rights. Kejriwal emphasized that such threats and imprisonments would not intimidate party workers.
