Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, hosts an array of Durga Puja celebrations, but the Gorkha community, particularly the Jharkhand Armed Force One (JAP-1), presents a unique spectacle. Their Durga Puja, dating back to 1880, departs from conventional practices, emphasizing a blend of faith and military tradition.

During Navratri, instead of a traditional idol, a kalash is installed, symbolizing the presence of Maa Durga. The commencement of the puja is marked by a ceremonial gunfire salute from the JAP-1 soldiers, a demonstration of respect and reverence. This unique tradition is believed to enhance the power of their weapons and bolster the soldiers’ morale. The soldiers’ weapons are considered blessed and are believed to never fail in the face of danger.

A notable aspect of the puja is the sacrifice of 101 goats on Mahanavami. Before each sacrifice, the Gorkha soldiers pay their respects with a volley of gunfire, a practice that exemplifies their reverence and martial spirit.

The Mahasaptami day features the Phool Pati procession, where branches of nine different trees are collected and worshipped. The Gorkha community uses this occasion to renew their commitment to environmental conservation.

The Mahanavami also includes a special puja where the Gorkha soldiers present their weapons to Maa Durga for blessings, followed by the goat sacrifices and the customary gunfire salute, reinforcing their devotion and valor.
