The medical community and the people of Palamu are in grief following the passing of Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician celebrated for his unwavering dedication to the underprivileged. Dr. Singh was more than a doctor; he was a symbol of hope and affordable healthcare, famously charging only ₹5 for his services. This incredibly low fee, in stark contrast to the often overwhelming costs of medical care today, made him a beloved figure among the poor. He operated with a profound sense of duty, ensuring his clinic was accessible at all hours, never engaging in exploitative practices like unnecessary tests or exorbitant charges. His empathy stemmed from his own humble beginnings in Murma village, where he understood the hardships faced by ordinary people. For many years, he served tirelessly in Haidernagar, treating a large volume of patients, a significant number of whom were seen without any charge. His compassionate approach was also evident during his time in Ramna and Nagar Untari. Relocating to Daltonganj did not diminish his commitment. When a private hospital requested his expertise, he initially maintained his ₹5 fee, later agreeing to ₹50 due to hospital operational concerns, a testament to his flexibility in ensuring continued service. Dr. Singh’s life was a testament to the belief that healing is a noble calling, not a business. His simple lifestyle and emphasis on human relationships further enriched his legacy. He truly lived up to the divine status often bestowed upon compassionate physicians.
