The centenary of the Ol Chiki script was recently honored with President Droupadi Murmu emphasizing the critical importance of preserving tribal languages, cultures, and indigenous knowledge. The celebration, held in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district, honored 100 years of the script developed by the visionary Pandit Raghunath Murmu. President Murmu articulated that Pandit Murmu’s script has profoundly shaped the Santhali people’s cultural consciousness and sense of belonging. Her address commenced with a heartfelt rendition of a traditional Santhali Nehor prayer song, a personal touch that resonated with the audience. She explained the prayer’s purpose: to seek guidance from ‘Jaher Ayo,’ representing Mother Earth, for leading society down a just path. The President delivered her entire speech in the Santhali language, conveying a deep sense of connection to the revered location. She expressed her admiration for the enduring dedication of Santhali writers and cultural advocates who tirelessly work to keep the Ol Chiki script and Santhali language vibrant. President Murmu lauded the Union government’s decision to publish the Indian Constitution in the Ol Chiki script, describing it as a landmark achievement for linguistic inclusion. She also underscored the principle that effective public administration requires information to be disseminated in the people’s mother tongues. During the event, twelve individuals were felicitated by President Murmu for their significant contributions to Santhali language and literary arts. State leaders present reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding tribal identity and traditions.
