Khunti district is grappling with an intense cold spell, marked by rapidly falling temperatures and frigid mornings and nights. The severe cold is compelling people to stay indoors from the early evening onwards. A significant concern is the apparent inaction from the district administration, which has not yet organized any blanket distribution programs or established bonfires in public spaces. The impact is most severe on the poor and marginalized communities in Khunti’s urban and rural areas, including laborers facing harsh conditions on the streets, at bus terminals, and in market areas. This year’s preparedness is conspicuously absent, unlike previous years when district authorities usually commenced arrangements for bonfires by early November. Local residents are voicing their dismay over the administrative apathy, stating that the usual support for the needy during winter is missing. Furthermore, there has been no proactive step from Gram Panchayat representatives or block administrations, despite weather predictions of continued cold. The public and various social groups are appealing to the district administration to expedite the implementation of essential cold-weather safety measures. This includes setting up bonfires at strategic locations and launching a comprehensive blanket distribution campaign for the underprivileged. Social organizations are pleading for swift humanitarian action to prevent suffering during the cold nights. In response to queries about the delay in blanket distribution, the Torpa Block Development Officer confirmed that the necessary supplies have not yet been received by the blocks. The Torpa Circle Officer added that no instructions have been provided by the district administration regarding the establishment of bonfires.
