Dhanbad’s SNMMCH government hospital was the scene of a brief panic on November 19th when a jackal found its way into the surgical ward. The presence of the wild animal startled both patients and the hospital staff, leading to immediate concern. Upon seeing the jackal near the barricades, patients requested lights be switched on, which caused the animal to quickly escape the area. The incident has cast a shadow over the hospital’s security arrangements, though thankfully, no one was harmed during the encounter.
Jharkhand Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari offered his perspective on the jackal’s intrusion. He stated that holding the hospital or its doctors responsible for such wildlife encounters is unfair, likening it to natural occurrences like snakes appearing in village hospitals, which are outside medical professionals’ control. He posed rhetorical questions about accountability: ‘If a tiger were to enter the hospital, would I be held responsible? Is the government culpable if a tiger roams the city?’ The minister assured that significant improvements in healthcare are on the horizon for Dhanbad, with the forthcoming launch of an advanced medical college hospital. While acknowledging the current security and operational questions surrounding SNMMCH, he has instructed officials to address these promptly. The minister is dedicated to enhancing the state’s medical infrastructure through continuous monitoring and reform efforts. Additionally, the development of a new super-specialty hospital and medical college in Dhanbad is progressing, expected to elevate both healthcare quality and safety standards for the region’s population. Hospital management has been tasked with implementing measures to prevent future incidents and maintain high levels of sanitation and security.
