In a significant political shift, former Jharkhand MLA Akil Akhtar has joined the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), strengthening the party’s foothold in the eastern state. The announcement came during a formal ceremony at the party’s Hyderabad headquarters, Darussalam, where Akhtar took membership in the presence of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

Akhtar, who previously represented the Pakur assembly constituency, expressed his commitment to AIMIM’s mission. ‘This party stands firmly for the rights of minorities, the marginalized, and the underprivileged,’ he stated. He is confident that his inclusion will propel AIMIM’s growth in Jharkhand, a state with a substantial Muslim population and ongoing political flux.

Owaisi welcomed Akhtar, highlighting his vast political experience. ‘Akhtar’s expertise will guide our expansion efforts in Jharkhand effectively,’ the Hyderabad MP remarked. The event saw the presence of key party figures from Jharkhand, including state president Mohammad Shakir, organization secretary Mahtab Alam, and others.

Akhtar’s political journey has been eventful. He began with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), from which he was expelled for six years due to internal issues. Later, he founded and led the Akhil All Jharkhand Students Party. In the 2024 assembly elections, he contested on a Samajwadi Party ticket but faced defeat, despite being labeled Jharkhand’s richest candidate.

This move underscores AIMIM’s aggressive strategy to penetrate beyond its Telangana base, targeting states like Jharkhand where minority votes could sway outcomes. Party insiders believe Akhtar’s local influence in Pakur and surrounding areas will aid in building a robust cadre. As elections approach, AIMIM aims to challenge established players by focusing on issues like economic disparity and community welfare.

The development has sparked discussions on shifting alliances in Jharkhand’s polarized politics. With Akhtar’s resources and network, AIMIM could emerge as a contender in key seats, altering the electoral landscape.
