Palamu is left with a void after the demise of Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician celebrated for his extraordinary compassion and his remarkably low fee of ₹5. His life was a testament to selfless service, proving that a healer’s true worth lies not in their charges but in their dedication to alleviating suffering. Dr. Singh operated his practice with a profound sense of duty, ensuring his doors were always open to those in need, irrespective of the time or their financial status. He was a doctor who never treated medicine as a commodity, eschewing deceptive practices and unnecessary medical interventions. His clinic in Haidernagar became a beacon of hope, where a consultation cost a mere ₹5. It’s estimated that he would attend to over a hundred patients daily, many of whom were treated for free. He often refused payment from patients in his home region, considering it his responsibility to serve them. This ethos of service continued in Ramna and Nagar Untari. Later, while residing in Daltonganj, he was approached by a private hospital to join their team. He insisted on maintaining his ₹5 fee, a principle he held dear. The hospital management eventually convinced him to raise it to ₹50, acknowledging the practicalities of running a medical facility. Dr. Singh’s journey began in Murma village, where his humble upbringing instilled in him a deep empathy for the struggles of the poor. He prioritized relationships and never sought to profit from his community. His simple living and humble demeanor were hallmarks of his character. Dr. Surendra Singh’s legacy is a powerful inspiration, demonstrating how genuine care and a commitment to accessibility can truly make a doctor a ‘god’ on earth.
