The Jharkhand government is being accused of a sinister tactic: fabricating new crimes to cover up ongoing illegal activities, particularly within the coal mafia network. Babulal Marandi, the state’s opposition leader, has publicly stated that the current administration and its systems have developed a habit of inventing new offenses to hide the truth. Recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigations in Dhanbad’s coal underworld have unearthed deeply troubling evidence. The most disturbing finding is the alleged instruction from senior police officials, allegedly enriched by coal black money, to ‘neutralize’ specific ground-level associates of coal mafias. The objective is reportedly to prevent these individuals from cooperating with the ED and exposing the truth. There are strong indications that those being questioned by the ED are now being targeted for elimination to ensure silence. This practice of ‘evidence assassination’ through staged encounters is a dark chapter in the state’s past. Jharkhand has previously seen a Director General of Police accused of orchestrating contract killings and unprecedented corruption, accusations even leveled by the ruling party. The ED must proceed with extreme caution, as the prevailing environment favors those who conceal facts over those who reveal them. When the state’s power, its institutions, and criminal enterprises become intertwined, the subversion of justice is tragically expedited.
