Cybercriminals have devised a new method to defraud people, using water bills as bait. In Ranchi, a man lost ₹8.6 lakhs after falling prey to this scheme. The victim received a WhatsApp message impersonating the Ranchi Municipal Corporation, threatening to cut off his water supply if the bill wasn’t paid. He contacted the number provided and was asked to download an app and make a ₹19 payment. Shortly after, large sums of money were withdrawn from his account. The victim reported the incident to the cybercrime police, who are now working to track down the culprits. The incident highlights the growing threat of cyber fraud and the need for caution against suspicious messages and links.
