A special POCSO court in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district has handed down a death sentence to a man for the rape and murder of a minor. The court classified the case as ‘rarest of rare,’ considering the victim’s age. The court has also ordered the payment of Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. The prosecution stated that the 11-year-old girl was abducted from her home on September 29, 2023, and was later found dead. The postmortem revealed she was raped and strangled. In a separate ruling, the Supreme Court granted bail to a man in Uttarakhand who was accused of religious conversion, noting that the marriage was performed with the consent of both families.
