New Delhi is sounding the alarm over escalating tensions in the Gulf region, where conflict has erupted amid the holy month of Ramadan. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated its call for all parties to exercise restraint, engage in dialogue, and pursue diplomatic solutions to avert further catastrophe.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s initial expression of grave concern on February 28, 2026, when hostilities first broke out between Iran and other actors in the Gulf. ‘We urged maximum restraint, de-escalation, and protection of civilians,’ he stated. Unfortunately, the situation has deteriorated sharply, with intensified fighting spilling over to neighboring countries.
The human toll is mounting, alongside widespread destruction. Everyday life has ground to a halt, economic activities are paralyzed, and supply chains disrupted. As a nation with vital stakes in the region’s security and stability, India views these developments with profound unease.
Nearly 10 million Indian nationals live and work in the Gulf, forming the backbone of its workforce. Their safety remains India’s top priority. ‘We cannot remain indifferent to any events impacting them,’ Jaiswal emphasized. India’s trade routes and energy supplies are heavily dependent on the area; any major disruption could ripple through the national economy.
India staunchly opposes attacks on commercial shipping, which have already claimed Indian lives or left some missing. In this context, New Delhi firmly renews its appeal for dialogue and diplomacy, demanding an immediate end to the violence. ‘We mourn the loss of innocent lives,’ the spokesperson added.
Indian missions in affected countries are in constant touch with citizens and community groups, issuing advisories and providing assistance to those stranded. They are actively addressing consular and commercial issues arising from the conflict.
High-level contacts continue with Gulf governments and key partners. The Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister have held discussions with counterparts. India will monitor the evolving situation closely and take necessary steps to safeguard national interests.
