Following the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his support. He emphasized the legislation’s role in protecting society from the harmful impacts of online gambling. On X, PM Modi stated that the bill will also foster the growth of e-sports and online social games.

“This Bill, approved by both Houses of Parliament, reflects our commitment to making India a hub for gaming, innovation, and creativity. It will encourage e-sports and online social games while also safeguarding our society from the detrimental effects of online money games,” PM Modi said.

The Rajya Sabha passed ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025’ on Thursday, amidst continued protests. The Online Gaming Bill was presented in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and was passed by voice vote. The bill aims to promote online social games and esports, the Union Minister said.

The Online Gaming Bill 2025 restricts online games that involve financial stakes, addressing concerns such as financial losses and addiction. The bill includes a ban on all forms of online betting and gambling. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Vaishnaw explained online gaming’s significance in the digital world. He described three areas: e-sports, involving teamwork and strategic thinking; online social games such as solitaire and Sudoku; and emphasized the bill’s intent to promote and legitimize these activities.

The Parliament Monsoon Session, which started on July 21, 2025, concluded on Thursday.
