New Delhi’s strategic maritime domain is a global lifeline, channeling 70-80% of world trade. Protecting this vital corridor demands a robust Indian Navy, which is ramping up its arsenal with cutting-edge warships and aircraft. In a major step forward, the Defence Acquisition Council has greenlit the purchase of six additional P-8I maritime patrol planes, significantly enhancing the navy’s long-range capabilities.

Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Thursday’s DAC meeting approved the Acceptance of Necessity for these aircraft. An official statement highlighted that these P-8Is will dramatically improve anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and strike potential over vast ocean expanses. This acquisition from the United States builds on the navy’s existing fleet.

India has previously procured 12 P-8I aircraft from Boeing: eight in 2009 and four in 2016. A prior AoN for six more was cleared in 2019, but procedural timelines necessitated a fresh approval after the US nodded to the potential sale in May 2021. Last year, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit, a joint statement affirmed progress on finalizing terms for these surveillance powerhouses.

The P-8I stands out for its prowess at 41,000 feet, detecting submerged submarines and engaging them precisely. With a staggering 8,300 km range, it features 11 hardpoints—five internal and six on wings—for launching Harpoon anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine charges, and mines. Equipped with advanced multi-mission surface search radar, it redefines naval reconnaissance.

This move underscores India’s commitment to maritime security amid rising regional tensions. As the Indo-Pacific grows more contested, these aircraft will fortify patrols, deter threats, and safeguard trade routes. The navy’s modernization drive signals readiness to counter submarine proliferation and piracy, ensuring national interests remain unassailable.
