In a landmark moment for India’s technological ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an advanced semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi hailed the event as a pivotal milestone in the nation’s journey toward semiconductor self-reliance.
The Prime Minister drew parallels with India’s recent success at the world’s largest AI summit, emphasizing how that event showcased the country’s AI prowess to the global stage. ‘Today marks another historic step in our commitment to technology leadership,’ he declared. Just a decade ago, discussions around data and chips were scarce in India, with conversations limited to the IT sector. But now, India is rapidly fortifying its hardware capabilities and cementing its role in the global semiconductor value chain.
PM Modi extended hearty congratulations to the Micron Technology team, the Gujarat government led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and all engineers and workers involved. He spotlighted Micron’s facility as a shining example of India’s transformed approach—from policy formulation to production execution. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in June 2023, groundbreaking occurred in September 2023, pilot machines were installed by February 2024, and commercial production has now kicked off in February 2026, an astonishing feat.
Experts in the sector will appreciate the significance: even advanced nations take 3-5 years for such complex agreements, yet India achieved this in mere months. ‘When intent is clear and dedication to national growth unwavering, policies sharpen and decisions accelerate,’ PM Modi noted. He also expressed special gratitude to Micron’s leadership for their pivotal role in this success story, underscoring India’s rising stature in the global tech ecosystem.
