Imphal buzzed with energy on International Women’s Day as the Sports Authority of India (SAI) North East Regional Centre rolled out the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle – Imphal Edition’ at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex. The event, held on Sunday, March 8, drew cyclists, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts eager to pedal towards a healthier nation.

Manipur Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam flagged off the cycling competition, setting the tone for a day dedicated to wellness and empowerment. Speaking to the media, the minister emphasized the initiative’s core mission: inspiring people to embrace active lifestyles and align with the Fit India vision. ‘A fit India is essential for the country’s progress,’ he stated, urging every citizen to prioritize physical activity.

The minister extended heartfelt greetings on Women’s Day, calling on everyone to engage in health-promoting activities. His words resonated with participants, highlighting government efforts through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to foster nationwide fitness awareness.

Arjuna Awardee Laishram Sarita Devi, a boxing icon, joined the chorus, motivating women to stay fit and lead by example. ‘Women build society and lay the foundation for a healthy one,’ she said, stressing equality and self-care. ‘Take care of yourselves and keep your families fit.’

SAI North East Regional Centre’s in-charge director, Dhandapani C, praised the participation from various cycling clubs. ‘Our goal is to promote fitness across communities,’ he noted, as CRPF personnel, athletes, and locals united in the ride to champion a fitter India.

The event not only celebrated women’s achievements but also reinforced the power of collective action in building a stronger, healthier future.
