In a groundbreaking move for India’s defence education landscape, IIT Ropar has unveiled an M.Tech program in Defence Technology in collaboration with the Indian Army. This historic partnership marks the first time any IIT has forged such a comprehensive alliance with the armed forces, signing a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S).

The initiative targets mid-level army officers, equipping them with cutting-edge knowledge in defence technologies. Designed meticulously to bridge academic rigor and military imperatives, the two-year program emphasizes hands-on research, innovation-driven problem-solving, and practical training. Graduates will earn an M.Tech degree from IIT Ropar, a credential symbolizing top-tier technical excellence.

This collaboration extends beyond education into joint research and development. Key focus areas include next-generation Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs), advanced weaponry solutions, and novel materials for armoured platforms. By addressing critical technological challenges, the partnership aims to bolster India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing and modernization of armoured formations.

IIT Ropar Director Prof. Rajeev Ahuja hailed the tie-up as transformative. ‘This synergy of IIT Ropar’s intellectual prowess and the Indian Army’s operational excellence creates a unique model for nurturing defence technology leaders,’ he stated. The MoU was inked by Major General Vikram Verma, Commandant of ACC&S, and Prof. Ahuja.

The ripple effects promise to extend to civilian sectors like autonomous vehicles, advanced manufacturing, and materials engineering. This pioneering effort positions India firmly on the path to becoming a global defence technology leader by 2047, fostering an ecosystem where academia and military converge for national security advancements.
