Hyderabad erupted in grief and fury on Sunday as members of the Shia community took to the streets, condemning the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israel strikes. The old city’s Shia-dominated neighborhoods, including Purani Haveli, Noor Khan Bazaar, and Darulshifa, were draped in mourning black.

Men, women, and children, clutching portraits of the revered leader, marched in unison, their voices rising in powerful slogans against the attackers. The protests were a poignant display of solidarity with Iran, where Khamenei was seen as the global spiritual guide for Shias.

Addressing the crowd, a prominent Shia leader declared Khamenei a martyr for standing firm against oppression and refusing to bow to tyrants. He lamented the lack of unity among Muslims as a key factor behind this tragedy, urging the community to reflect and unite.

Organized by the Shia religious and socio-political group Tanzeem-e-Jafri, the rally commenced from Mazhar-e-Ibne-Khatoon in Purani Haveli. Thousands joined, many weeping openly while holding photos of the fallen leader. The atmosphere was thick with sorrow, yet resolute in defiance.

Anticipating potential unrest, police bolstered security across the old city to maintain order. At the Iranian Consulate in Hyderabad, the national flag flew at half-mast in tribute to Khamenei.

Reports from Tehran confirm the 86-year-old leader was killed Saturday morning in his office during coordinated US-Israel attacks. Iranian media revealed the heartbreaking toll: Khamenei’s daughter, grandson, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law also perished. Iran’s Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards Commander Mohammad Pakpour were among other high-profile casualties.

This brazen strike has ignited global outrage, particularly among Shia communities worldwide. As Hyderabad’s protests underscore, Khamenei’s death marks not just a loss for Iran but a rallying cry against perceived imperialism. The coming days will test regional stability and interfaith dynamics in India.
