CHENNAI – The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) here has issued a stark warning as a low-pressure area brewing over the Bay of Bengal threatens Tamil Nadu with intense rainfall starting next week. Forecasters predict heavy downpours across at least 10 districts on February 21, signaling a dramatic shift from the current dry spell gripping the state.
The system, forming over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea regions, is intensifying steadily. Until February 18, Tamil Nadu can expect predominantly dry conditions. However, change is on the horizon from February 19, when light to moderate showers are likely in southern coastal districts and parts of the Delta region.
By February 20, the low-pressure area will gain strength, bringing moderate rains to multiple areas of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The peak arrives on February 21, with heavy rainfall forecast for Delta districts including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukkottai. Southern districts like Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi could see intense bursts at isolated spots.
The alert extends into February 22, with thunderstorms and heavy showers expected in Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. Fisherfolk have been urged to avoid venturing into southern coastal waters, where rough seas are anticipated due to the system’s ferocity.
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are advised to stay vigilant, follow administration guidelines, and prepare for potential disruptions. Officials are monitoring the situation closely, ready to issue updates as the system evolves. This early monsoon-like activity could bring relief from heat but also risks of waterlogging and flash floods in vulnerable zones.
