Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a stark warning for residents across nine districts of Tamil Nadu. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the next two days, driven by an easterly wind system over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern promises to drench large swathes of the state, prompting urgent calls for vigilance.

The districts on high alert include Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Salem, and Namakkal, where intense showers could lead to significant disruptions. Kudalore, Thanjavur, and Ramanathapuram are also forecasted to see heavy downpours during the day. Accompanying thunder and lightning heighten risks of localized flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and traffic snarls on key roads.

Farmers in vulnerable regions and coastal communities have been urged to take precautionary measures, closely following government advisories. While Chennai and its suburbs may experience light showers with thunder, widespread flooding isn’t anticipated yet. However, intermittent rains could cause temporary inconveniences.

Looking ahead, light rains are likely to persist statewide on Monday, gradually easing in interior areas. No fog is expected, but rising minimum temperatures—up to 3°C above normal—could make nights warmer despite the rains. Fishermen are advised to monitor bulletins closely, as rough seas persist in parts of the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities emphasize staying alert and adhering to safety directives as conditions evolve. This bout of monsoon-like weather underscores Tamil Nadu’s vulnerability to sudden atmospheric shifts, reminding residents of the need for robust preparedness.
