As summer approaches in Gujarat’s Narmada district, the forests have transformed into a vibrant sea of orange. Palash trees, locally known as Khakhra, are in full bloom, drawing crowds of tourists eager to witness this natural spectacle. The striking flowers not only enhance the region’s beauty but also provide a vital income source for local communities.
With greenery fading and leaves shedding in the rising heat, Palash stands out boldly. Around the iconic Statue of Unity, these blooming trees create picturesque landscapes that rival any seasonal attraction. Visitors flock to spots like Ekta Nagar, where the floral display adds a splash of color to the otherwise arid surroundings.
Local women have seized this opportunity, turning the blooms into profitable ventures. At Ekta Nursery in Ekta Nagar, a group of women runs stalls selling handicrafts and herbal products, including soaps crafted from Palash flowers. The demand for these natural soaps surges during summer, generating monthly earnings between 40,000 to 50,000 rupees.
Neeru Tadvi, head of the Radhe Krishna Mission Mangalam Group from Kevadia village, shared their inspiring journey. Formed in 2022 with just 10 members, the group relied on government aid to start. ‘We used to do household chores and farm labor. With a 70,000-rupee loan from three members, we opened our shop,’ she said. Today, they sustain steady annual income without needing to venture far from home.
Training in soap-making has allowed them to diversify. They produce varieties infused with lemon, aloe vera, and rose, sourcing materials locally. Tourists visiting the Statue of Unity snap up these products, enabling members to earn 10,000 to 15,000 rupees monthly. This income covers household expenses and allows savings.
Sumitra Tadvi from Kothi village echoed the sentiment. ‘We moved from daily wage labor to profiting from Kesuda (Palash) soaps,’ she noted. The seasonal flowers have not only beautified Narmada’s natural vistas but also empowered women with sustainable livelihoods, proving nature’s bounty can fuel economic growth.
