Ahmedabad’s bustling streets were once a chaotic maze of rule-breaking drivers, but Gujarat’s government is changing that with cutting-edge technology. Under the Safe Gujarat Campaign, police have installed thousands of CCTV cameras at busy intersections and highways. These eyes in the sky feed live footage to advanced traffic monitoring centers, enabling real-time oversight of vehicle movement.

Digitalization has transformed enforcement. E-challans are issued instantly for violations, streamlining fines and curbing bad habits. Local resident Ravindra Patel shared his story: heading from Bopal to his shop without a helmet, he received an e-challan. He paid it promptly at the cyber control room, appreciating the efficiency.

Vyomesh Babulal echoed this, noting how an e-memo for a violation taught him a lesson. He settled it in minutes at the office, vowing to follow rules henceforth. These anecdotes highlight a shift toward compliance.

Aligned with PM Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s administration launched the Transport Portal and e-challan system. The results are staggering: fines collected soared from Rs 153.78 crore in 2023 to Rs 195.87 crore in 2024, and nearly Rs 231 crore in 2025. Over three years, revenue exceeded Rs 581 crore, with 1.45 crore challans issued—85.71 lakh in 2025 alone, 76.46 lakh online. Ahmedabad accounted for 40.20 lakh challans.

Traffic DCP Naresh Kanjaria praised the digital push: ‘Ahmedabad needed this badly. E-monitoring from control rooms ensures swift action against violators.’ CCTV not only catches helmetless riders, wrong-side driving, and improper parking but also aids in accident response and crime prevention, bolstering law and order.

The Safe Gujarat initiative prioritizes road safety over revenue. Cameras pinpoint crash sites for quick aid, fostering disciplined traffic. Gujarat’s smart management is setting a national benchmark for safer roads.
