In a significant move to honor military service across all branches, the Indian government has officially notified the Ex-Servicemen (Re-employment in Central Civil Services and Posts) Amendment Rules, 2026. This landmark regulation now explicitly includes officers from the Military Nursing Service (MNS) under the ex-servicemen quota, clearing long-standing ambiguities.
Previously, there was uncertainty about whether commissioned MNS officers qualified for the same re-employment benefits as their counterparts in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The new rules eliminate this gray area by amending clause 2(c)(i)(i), stating that any individual who has served in any rank in the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, or MNS—whether in combatant or non-combatant roles—will be recognized as an ex-serviceman.
This inclusion opens doors for MNS personnel to access reservation in central government jobs: 10% in Group C and 20% in Group D positions. Additionally, age relaxations have been standardized, adding three years to their effective age by deducting military service years, allowing them to apply for civil services well into their careers.
Beyond quotas, MNS officers will now receive priority in recruitments conducted by bodies like UPSC and SSC, placing them on equal footing with other ex-servicemen. This policy shift not only boosts rehabilitation opportunities but also acknowledges the vital contributions of nursing professionals in the armed forces.
Effective from February 9, the amendment underscores the government’s commitment to the welfare of all military veterans. By integrating MNS into the fold, it ensures their skills and dedication translate into rewarding second careers in public service, fostering greater social and economic integration.
