Dense fog and biting cold have gripped Gautam Buddh Nagar, prompting authorities to shut down schools from nursery to class 8 until January 10. The decision aims to safeguard young students from harsh winter conditions that have severely disrupted daily life.

In the national capital region, visibility has plummeted to dangerous levels, with reports of multiple accidents on highways due to the thick blanket of fog. Temperatures have dipped below 5 degrees Celsius in many areas, making it perilous for children to travel to school.

District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma announced the closure on Wednesday, emphasizing the priority of student safety. ‘The extreme weather poses significant health risks and commuting hazards for schoolchildren,’ he stated. Parents have welcomed the move, though many express concerns over disrupted education schedules.

This isn’t the first time such measures have been taken. Last year, similar closures were enforced amid prolonged cold waves. Schools for higher classes remain operational, but with adjusted timings to avoid peak fog hours.

Meteorologists predict the cold spell to persist for another week, with no immediate relief in sight. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially during early mornings and late evenings. Meanwhile, online classes have been suggested as an alternative for younger students to keep learning on track.

As the region battles these challenging conditions, local administrations are ramping up fog management efforts, including enhanced street lighting and traffic advisories. The school holiday extension underscores the gravity of the situation, putting child welfare front and center.
